Supreme Court Blocks Sex Discrimination Class-Action Suit Against Wal-Mart

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that a huge class-action lawsuit against Wal-Mart Stores alleging sex discrimination cannot proceed, reversing a decision by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. The lawsuit could have involved up to 1.6 million current and former Wal-Mart employees and billions of dollars in damages.

The plaintiffs can still pursue their suit on their own, but not as a class action, the court ruled, meaning that much less money would be at stake. The court said the proposed class would be too unwieldy and diverse and that there were other problems with the way the case was filed.

Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is initiating a voluntary recall of one lot of RISPERDAL® (risperidone) 3mg Tablets, marketed by Janssen Division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and one lot of risperidone 2mg Tablets, marketed by Patriot Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The recalls stem from two consumer reports of an uncharacteristic odor thought to be caused by trace amounts of TBA (2,4,6 tribromoanisole).

McIlroy Wins U.S. Open

Finishing off his wire-to-wire victory, Rory McIlroy hit shot after shot that capped his historically impressive victory at the U.S. Open, finishing with a score of 16 under par. He began the final round on Sunday with an eight-stroke lead, which no one threatened.

It was the first major championship for McIlroy, an engaging 22-year-old from Northern Ireland.
