Petra Kvitova Upsets Maria Sharapova to Win Wimbledon Title

Petra Kvitova, the 24-year-old Czech, beat Maria Sharapova, the one-time Wimbledon champion, 6-3, 6-4, to win her first ever Grand Slam title.

Kvitova, the eighth-seed, made short work of her Russian rival, taking less than two hours to beat Sharapova, who spent the entire match scrambling to catch up.

Kvitova was playing in her first major final, but it was three-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova that showed her nerves. The 2004 Wimbledon champion double-faulted six times, including twice to get broken to 4-2 in the first set.

On Sunday, Rafael Nadal of Spain will meet Novak Djokovic of Serbia for the men's title.

For Strauss-Kahn Prosecutors, Accuser's Phone Call Was Alarming Revelation

A series of troubling statements, fabrications and associations unraveled the case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn and upended prosecutors' view of the hotel housekeeper at the center of the ordeal.

In the latest revelation, investigators with the Manhattan district attorney's office finished translating a recording of a phone call between the housekeeper and a boyfriend in an immigration jail in Arizona.

"She says words to the effect of, 'Don't worry, this guy has a lot of money. I know what I'm doing,' " a well-placed law enforcement official said.

Weeklong Rally Lifts Dow Index by 5.4%

American stock markets wrapped up one of their strongest weeks in two years with further gains on Friday, erasing their losses from earlier in June. An unexpected upturn in manufacturing and easing of concerns about a public-debt default in Greece were the driving forces.

The Dow industrials closed on Friday at 12,582.77, a gain of 1.36 percent for the day and 5.4 percent for the week, in preliminary figures. The broader S.&P. 500 did even better, gaining 1.44 percent on Friday and 6 percent for the week.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn Is Released From House Arrest

Dominique Strauss-Kahn was released from house arrest on Friday as the sexual assault case against him moved one step closer to dismissal after prosecutors told a Manhattan judge that they had serious problems with the case.

Prosecutors acknowledged that there were significant credibility issues with the hotel housekeeper who accused Mr. Strauss-Kahn of trying to rape her in May. He was released on his own recognizance.

News Alert: Strauss-Kahn Case Seen as in Jeopardy

Strauss-Kahn Case Seen as in Jeopardy

The sexual assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn is on the verge of collapse as investigators have uncovered major holes in the credibility of the housekeeper who charged that she was attacked by the French politician in his Manhattan hotel suite in May, according to two well-placed law enforcement officials.

Although forensic tests found unambiguous evidence of a sexual encounter between Mr. Strauss-Kahn and the woman, prosecutors do not believe much of what the accuser has told them about the circumstances or about herself.

Since her initial allegation on May 14, the accuser has repeatedly lied, one of the law enforcement officials said.
