News Alert: U.S.-Born al Qaeda Leader Anwar al-Awlaki Is Killed in Yemen

U.S.-Born al Qaeda Leader Anwar al-Awlaki Is Killed in Yemen

SANA, Yemen — Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born preacher depicted as a leading figure in Al Qaeda's outpost in Yemen, was killed on Friday morning in the north of the country, according to the Defense Ministry.

Earlier this year, the American military renewed its campaign of airstrikes in Yemen, using drone aircraft and fighter jets to attack Qaeda militants. One of the attacks was aimed at Mr. Awlaki, one of the most prominent members of the Qaeda affiliate group. There was no immediate comment from American officials.

But Mr. Awlaki's death, if confirmed, seemed likely to be welcomed in the United States, where Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said in July that two of his top goals were to remove Ayman al-Zawahri, Al Qaeda's new leader after the death of Osama Bin Laden, and Mr. Awlaki.

Shermag Recalls to Repair Drop-Side Cribs Due to Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Drop-side cribs

Units: About 2,300; about 800 in Canada

Manufacturer: Shermag Inc., of Quebec, Canada

Hazard: The drop-side rail hardware on the cribs can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches, a hazardous gap is created between the drop-side rail and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become wedged or entrapped, posing risks of suffocation and strangulation. In addition, children can fall out of the crib when the drop-side rail falls unexpectedly or detaches from the crib. Drop-side rail failures can also occur due to incorrect assembly or with age-related wear and tear.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and the firm are aware of 21 incidents involving drop sides that failed or detached. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves wooden drop-side cribs with hidden drop-side hardware. The cribs were sold in various colors. Model numbers 202647, 211047 and 272547 are included in this recall. The cribs were sold separately and as part of the "City Lights," "Fairy Tales" and "Dormez Vous" furniture collections. "Shermag" is printed on a tag on the mattress springs. The model numbers can be found on stickers and warning labels on the crib's headboard or footboard.

Sold at: The Land of Nod and other baby specialty stores from September 2004 through December 2008 for between $400 and $800.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop using these cribs immediately and contact the firm to request a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop-side. In the meantime, parents are urged to find an alternate, safe sleeping environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard or toddler bed depending on the child's age.

Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Shermag at (800) 567-3419 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's website at http://www.shermag.com

Important Message from CPSC: CPSC reminds parents not to use any crib with missing, broken or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for parts separating that can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib. Babies have died in cribs where repairs were attempted by caregivers. Crib age is a factor in safety. At a minimum, CPSC staff recommends that you do not use a crib that is older than 10 years old. Effective June 28, 2011, new, mandatory federal crib rules require that all cribs manufactured and sold after that date must meet new and improved safety requirements (pdf). Older cribs do not meet the new standard and can have a variety of safety problems. Check if your crib has been recalled at www.cpsc.gov

Note: Health Canada's press release is available at http://cpsr-rspc.hc-sc.gc.ca/PR-RP/recall-retrait-eng.jsp?re_id=1426

News Alert: Germany Approves Expansion of Euro Bailout Fund

Breaking News Alert

Germany Approves Expansion of Euro Bailout Fund

The German Parliament approved the expansion of the bailout fund for heavily indebted European countries Thursday, the most important step in a tortuous process that has rattled markets and raised long-term doubts about the ability of governments to react to the expanding debt crisis.

The vote in Germany, Europe's largest economy and the only country with the fiscal wherewithal to pull fellow countries in the euro currency zone out of trouble, moved the struggling rescue forward. But analysts said it likely would offer only momentary relief rather than anything like a permanent solution.

And for Angela Merkel, Germany's chancellor, the victory merely provided breathing room after a divisive debate within her own parliamentary bloc that has weakened her grip on power at a critical moment. Opposition politicians argue that the vocal opposition within her ranks meant that Mrs. Merkel had lost control of her coalition and needed to dissolve the government.

Tampa Bay Rays Rally to Clinch A.L. Wild Card

In a ninth inning that served as a microcosm of their season, the Red Sox collapsed, blowing a one-run lead to lose to the Orioles 4-3. In an equally remarkable comeback, the Rays' Evan Longoria hit a walk-off home run to give the Rays an 8-7 victory over the Yankees and the American League wild card for Tampa Bay.

The Rays were down 7-0 in the eighth inning against the Yankees, but battled back to force extra innings. In the 12th inning, Longoria drove a line drive over the left field wall to seal the victory.

The Red Sox loss capped a 7-20 September that saw the Red Sox go from a playoff certainty to a historic footnote.

Cardinals Win N.L. Wild Card Berth

The Braves completed one of the most historic September collapses in baseball, losing 4-3 to Philadelphia in 13 innings as the St. Louis Cardinals won the National League wild card.

The Braves, up 3-2 in the top of the ninth inning, put their season on the shoulders of All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel. But Krimbel walked two batters and surrendered a sacrifice fly to Chase Utley, leaving the game with the Braves tied. In the thirteenth inning, Hunter Pence put the nail in the Braves' coffin with a one-run infield single.

In St. Louis, with the season on the line, the Cardinals turned to their on-again, off-again ace Chris Carpenter, and this time he delivered. Carpenter went the distance, striking out 11, as the Cardinals beat the Astros 8-0.

The Braves led the Cardinals by 10-1/2 games at the start of play Aug. 26. Since then, the Cardinals are 22-9, the Braves 10-20.

Obama Administration Asks Justices to Rule Quickly on Health Law

The Obama administration asked the Supreme Court on Wednesday to hear a case concerning the 2010 health care overhaul law. The development came unexpectedly fast and makes it all but certain that the court will soon agree to hear one or more cases involving challenges to the law, with arguments by the spring and a decision by June, in time to land in the middle of the 2012 presidential campaign.

The Justice Department said the justices should hear its appeal of a decision by a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, in Atlanta, that struck down the centerpiece of the law by a 2-to-1 vote.

News Alert: Senate Reaches Deal to Ward Off a Government Shutdown

Senate Reaches Deal to Avert a Government Shutdown

The Senate reached a tentative spending deal Monday night that would head off a threatened government shutdown over the handling of disaster aid, Senate officials said.

The apparent breakthrough came after the Federal Emergency Management Agency indicated it had enough money to squeak through the end of the fiscal year Friday night, eliminating one of the main points of partisan contention: whether to offset a quick infusion of funds to the agency with cuts elsewhere as House Republicans had insisted. Democrats in both the House and Senate had resisted that approach.

According to a recently released report issued by the National Research Council (NRC), the primary drivers of future economic growth and job creation will be innovations largely derived from advances in science and engineering. An increasing number of jobs at all levels--not just for professional scientists--require knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The stakes ...

USGS Science - How Will Climate Change Impact Leaf Fall?

How Will Climate Change Impact Leaf Fall?

And What You Can Do to Help!

The fall season is perfect for taking a walk or a drive to see the beautiful leaves changing colors from green to red, orange and yellow. As climate changes, it affects the timing of when leaves emerge, the amount of foliage that grows as well as the timeframe when leaves begin to fall. The study of the timing of such events as related to climate is termed "phenology." USGS scientists are studying how forest phenology may be impacted by climate change, while also looking at how climate change impacts combine with other disturbances such as tree defoliation by insects and death by disease or fire.

Understanding forest phenology patterns is important because they affect the availability of habitats and the flows of water that are critical to animals and people. This research will help inform decisions to responsibly manage land and water resources in response to any future changes in climate and the associated impacts.

Scientists are focusing research on the forests of the Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge province of Virginia. These forests have been protected from major land-use change for many decades, and the National Park Service has recorded the dates and often the location of disturbances such as fires and insect infestations. These factors make the park an excellent "laboratory" in which to conduct phenology research. Scientists are using satellite imagery to track and observe the forest and study the relation between seasonal forest change and weather.

You Can Help Too!

Become involved by recording when plants first leaf out and bloom each year. You can do so through the USA National Phenology Network, which was established by the USGS in collaboration with the National Science Foundation. Citizens across the nation are providing data on plants and animals. More information on the USA-NPN can be found online.

You can learn more about this research and venture into Shenandoah National Park by watching forest changes through our webcam. Additional information on this study is also available online at
