CDC Vital Signs provides recent, comprehensive data on key indicators of important health topics for key diseases, conditions, or risk factors. The September 2010 CDC Vital Signs presents data on smoking and secondhand smoke.

The decline in adult smoking has stalled in the US and half of children are still exposed to secondhand smoke.

Smoking continues to be the leading preventable cause of death and disease in the country. The government is intensifying its efforts to reduce tobacco use and there are steps states, providers, employers, communities and retailers, and people can take to further reduce exposure to tobacco.
