News Alert: Hedge Fund Founder Raj Rajaratnam Sentenced to 11 Years in Insider Trading Case

Hedge Fund Founder Raj Rajaratnam Sentenced to 11 Years in Insider Trading Case

The fallen hedge fund billionaire Raj Rajaratnam received on Thursday the longest-ever prison sentence for insider trading, a watershed moment in the government's aggressive two-year campaign to root out the illegal exchange of confidential information on Wall Street.

Judge Richard J. Holwell sentenced Mr. Rajaratnam, the former head of the Galleon Group hedge fund, to 11 years in prison. A jury convicted him of securities fraud and conspiracy in May after a two-month trial.

Calling him "the modern face of illegal insider trading," prosecutors accused Mr. Rajaratnam of using a corrupt network of well-placed tipsters – including former executives of Intel, I.B.M. and the consulting firm McKinsey & Company – to illicitly gain about $64 million.

News Alert: Congress Passes 3 Free Trade Accords

Congress Passes 3 Free Trade Accords

Congress passed three long-awaited free trade agreements on Wednesday, ending a partisan standoff that has stretched across two presidencies.

Final approval of the deals with South Korea, Colombia and Panama is a bipartisan victory for President Obama and proponents of the view that foreign trade can drive America's economic growth, in the face of rising protectionist sentiment in both political parties. They are the first trade agreements to pass Congress since Democrats broke a decade of Republican control in 2007.

Nigerian Man Pleads Guilty in Plot to Blow Up Plane

A Nigerian man who pleaded guilty to trying to blow up an international flight with a bomb in his underwear says he committed terrorism in retaliation for the killing of Muslims around the world.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab told a Detroit courtroom Wednesday that the bomb was a "blessed weapon to save the lives of innocent Muslims."

Abdulmutallab has pleaded guilty on the second day of his trial to charges that include conspiracy to commit terrorism and attempted murder.

He says he tried to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253 with nearly 300 people on board on Christmas 2009.

The bomb didn't work, but Abdulmutallab was badly burned. Hours later in the hospital, he told the FBI that he was working for Al Qaeda in Yemen.

Netanyahu Announces Deal to Free Shalit

JERUSALEM — Israel and Hamas have reached a tentative agreement on a proposal to exchange Palestinian prisoners for an Israeli soldier held captive for more than five years, both sides said Tuesday. The Israeli cabinet was meeting in emergency session to discuss it.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, who summoned all 29 Cabinet ministers to vote on the agreement concerning the fate of the captive soldier, Staff. Sgt. Gilad Shalit, went on Israeli television beforehand to announce it, a sign that he was confident of Cabinet approval.

"If all goes according to plan, Gilad will be returning to Israel in the coming days," Mr. Netanyahu said.

News Alert: U.S. Accuses Iranians of Plotting to Kill Saudi Envoy

U.S. Accuses Iranians of Plotting to Kill Saudi Envoy

Federal authorities foiled a plot by men linked to the Iranian government to kill the Saudi ambassador to the United States and to bomb the embassies of Saudi Arabia and Israel in Washington, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said in a news conference on Tuesday.

The men accused of plotting the attacks were Manssor Arbab Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri, according to court documents filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York. Both men are originally from Iran, Reuters reported.

There is "no basis to believe that any other co-conspirators are present in the U.S.," Mr. Holder said.

He said the men were connected to the secretive Quds Force, a division of Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps that has carried out operations in other countries. He said that money in support of the plot had been transferred through a bank in New York, but that the men had not yet obtained any explosives.

Israel Considering Proposed Deal to Free Soldier Held by Hamas

The Israeli government was due to meet in emergency session Tuesday to discuss a proposal to exchange Palestinian prisoners for an Israeli soldier who has been held captive by Hamas for more than five years, a senior Israeli official said. The official said all 29 ministers had been summoned for the meeting concerning the fate of Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu viewed the proposal on the table as serious. He said the cabinet was expected to vote on the proposal.

Al Arabiyya, the satellite network, was reporting that Egyptian mediators had made a breakthrough and that the exchange for Mr. Shalit could happen as early as November. One Israeli official said that Mr. Netanyahu had already met with his most senior ministers to review the names of hundreds of Hamas prisoners to be released. Sergeant Shalit was seized in a cross-border raid by Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups in June 2006, and was taken into Gaza. He was 19.

Christie to Endorse Romney Ahead of Debate

A week after turning down the chance to seek the Republican presidential nomination, Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey is poised to endorse the candidacy of Mitt Romney on Tuesday afternoon here, just hours before the party's candidates gather for another debate.

Mr. Christie's endorsement will quickly add to the sense that establishment Republicans are rallying around Mr. Romney as their best hope at retaking the White House.

Thomas J. Sargent and Christopher A. Sims Win Nobel for Economics

Americans Thomas Sargent and Christopher Sims won the Nobel economics prize on Monday "for their empirical research on cause and effect in the macroeconomy," the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

The prize committee said the winners developed methods for answering questions such as how economic growth and inflation are affected by a temporary increase in the interest rate or a tax cut. Mr. Sargent and Mr. Sims — both 68 — carried out their research independently in the 1970s and '80s.

"Today, the methods developed by Sargent and Sims are essential tools in macroeconomic analysis," the citation said.

Sargent is a professor at New York University, and Sims is a professor at Princeton University.

The economics prize capped this year's Nobel announcements. The awards will be handed out on Dec. 10 — the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel's death.
