Target Recall Children's Frog Masks Due to Suffocation Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Children's Frog Masks

Units: About 3,400

Importer: Target Corp., of Minneapolis, Minn.

Hazard: The plush frog masks lack proper ventilation. When secured in place across a child's face, it presents a suffocation hazard to the child.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves child-sized frog-themed animal masks. The plush mask is green with yellow and red highlights. There are two eye cutouts and a green elastic band with a fastener used to secure the mask at the back of the child's head. UPC code 06626491474 is printed on a label attached to the mask.

Sold exclusively at: Target stores nationwide from August 2011 through September 2011 for about $1.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take masks from young children and return the product to any Target store for a full refund.

LittleLife Baby Carriers Recalled by Lifemarque Due to Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: LittleLife Discoverer Child Carriers

Units: About 40 in the United States and 10 in Canada

Manufacturer: Lifemarque, of United Kingdom

Importer: Rock Gear, of Canada

Hazard: The carriers were sold without bolts that attach the carrier's main frame to the metal stand. Missing bolts cause the carrier to disconnect from the stand and fall backwards, posing a fall hazard to a child in the carrier.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves LittleLife Discoverer child carriers. "LittleLife" is printed on the back of the carriers. Number LS55060 is printed on a tab sewn underneath the care label. The carriers are green and gray with a black metal frame at the back with a folding leg bracket to enable the carriers to stand.

Sold at: Outdoor stores nationwide, Champaign Surplus in Champaign, Ill., Skinny Skis in Jackson, Wy. , Base Camp stores in Montana, and online at www.amazon.com, www.skinnyskis.com, www.thebasecamp.com, and www.MadAthlete.com from January 2011 through July 2011 for about $200.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the carriers and check to make sure there are two bolts on each side where the carrier's main frame attaches to the metal stand. If the bolts are missing, contact LittleLife for a free replacement product.

Name of Product: Twist and Sort Toys

Units: About 760

Manufacturer: Guidecraft Inc., of Winthrop, Minn.

Hazard: The small pegs on three of the four posts can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves Twist 'n Sort wooden toys. The toy has a square base, four posts and twelve primary-colored game pieces that can be arranged to fit over the posts. Product number "712" is printed on underside of base.

Sold at: Specialty toy stores and gift shops nationwide, catalogs and online from September 2009 through November 2010 for about $20.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled toys from children and contact Guidecraft to receive a replacement or another product of equal value.

Horizon Hobby Recalls Losi NiMH Battery Charger Due to Possible Burn and Fire Hazards

Name of Product: Losi NiMH Start-Up Combo Charger

Units: About 975 in U.S. and 25 in Canada

Importer: Horizon Hobby Inc., of Champaign, Ill.

Hazard: The charger and battery can emit excessive heat, posing a burn and fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Horizon Hobby has received eight reports of the batteries emitting excessive heat. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The Losi NiMH Start-Up Combo Charger is black, measures 4" x 2" and has model number LOSB9904. The model number is printed on the back of the product's packaging with the bar code. A Losi logo sticker is on the front of the charger, along with another sticker bearing the instruction: "Use only with 7.2V NiMH Batteries 1500mAh or higher." On the back of the charger is a sticker with voltage and current ratings for input (100-240VAC, 1.0A) and output (8.5V, 3A) along with another Losi logo.

Sold at: Hobby stores nationwide gave the battery chargers away free or for a small charge with a purchase, depending on the retailer from January 2011 to March 2011.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using this product and contact Horizon Hobby for a refund of the retail value.

Fair Oaks Dairy Products, LLC today issued a voluntary recall of blue cheese produced under the Fair Oaks Royal Blue Cheese label and purchased on or after September 25, 2011 because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Basque Militant Group ETA Says It Is Laying Down Arms

After nearly half a century of violence, the Basque separatist group ETA declared a unilateral end to its campaign of bombings and shootings on Friday, saying it wished to seize "an historical opportunity to reach a just and democratic resolution" of the conflict in the ethnically Basque areas of northeastern Spain and southwestern France.

The group's announcement of "the definite cessation of its military activity" came in the form of a written statement and an accompanying video that was made available to The New York Times and the BBC in London under an embargo stipulating that the statement not to be made public until 6 p.m. British time, 1 p.m. EST in the United States. ETA's officials said they planned to release the statement simultaneously to two sympathetic Basque-language newspapers , Garra and Berria, published in San Sebastian, the political center of the main Basque homeland in Spain.

And for every person who dies, there are many more who think about, plan or attempt suicide, according to a report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Serious thoughts of suicide range from about 1 in 50 adults in Georgia (2.1 percent) to 1 in 15 in Utah (6.8 percent). For suicide attempts, the range goes from 1 in 1000 adults in Delaware and Georgia (0.1 percent) to 1 in 67 in Rhode Island (1.5 percent). Additional Retail Sales Prompt CPSC and Meijer to Re-announce Roman Shades and Roll-Up Blinds Recall; Strangulation Hazard Posed

Name of Product: "Innovations" and "At Home with Meijer" Roman shades and roll-up blinds

Units: About 3,200 units (240,000 originally recalled in March 2010)

Importer/Retailer: Meijer, of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Manufacturer: Whole Space Industries LTD, of Centereach, N.Y.

Hazard:

*Roman Shades - Strangulation can occur when a child places his/her neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the blind or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around his/her neck.

*Roll-up Blinds - Strangulation can occur if the lifting loops slide off the side of the blind and a child's neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop or if a child places his/her neck between the lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves previously recalled "Innovations" and "At Home with Meijer" Roman shades and roll-up blinds that were redistributed to stores and sold to consumers after March 2010 without a repair kit. The Roman shades are made with fabric or bamboo and the roll-up blinds with bamboo. A label reading "Innovation" or "At Home with Meijer" can be found under the headrail.

Sold at: Discount retailers, dollar stores, flea markets and other retail liquidators nationwide from March 2010 through September 2011 at various prices. Originally the products were sold at Meijer stores between January 2004 and December 2009 for about $40 before being recalled.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the Roman shades and the roll-up blinds and contact the Window Covering Safety Council for a free repair kit at (800) 506-4636 anytime or visit www.windowcoverings.org. Consumers can also return the products to any Meijer store for a full refund.

CDC Statement on Results from RTS,S/AS01 Malaria Vaccine Trial

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention welcomes the announcement today that results from the clinical trial in Africa of a malaria vaccine candidate show it prevented about half of malaria cases, including the most severe, in young children.

The RTS,S/AS01 study results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, are a promising advance in development of a malaria vaccine for African children, which, if successful, could save hundreds of thousands of lives. In 2009, malaria caused the deaths of nearly 800,000 people; approximately 90 percent were children in Africa. >>Learn more
