News Alert: Spanier and Paterno Are Out at Penn State

Spanier and Paterno Are Out at Penn State

Graham B. Spanier, one of longest-serving and highest-paid university presidents in the nation, who has helped raise the academic profile of Penn State during his tenure, stepped down Wednesday night after a sexual-abuse scandal involving a prominent former assistant football coach and the school's failure to act to halt further harm.

Spanier's departure came as the university's Board of Trustees also ended the 84-year-old Joe Paterno's career, denying him his wish to finish out the season, his 46th as head coach and his 62nd over all at the school.

Tom Bradley, longtime defensive coordinator, will become the interim coach starting on Saturday's game, and Rodney Erickson, Penn State provost, will replace Spanier as interim president.

News Alert: U.S. Stock Indexes Tumble by Over 3% on Fears About Italy's Debt

U.S. Stock Indexes Tumble by Over 3% on Fears About Italy's Debt

Stocks plummeted Wednesday and European bond yields rose to worrying levels on fears that Europe's sovereign debt crisis was widening.

As trading came to an end on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was down nearly 390 points, or more than 3 percent. The broader Standard & Poor's index was off about 3.7 percent, with bank stocks hit the hardest.

European shares fared little better, and the euro tumbled. Bond yields in Italy, one of Europe's largest economies, surpassed 7 percent, approaching the level that had sent other euro zone nations to seek bailouts. Spanish and French bond yields also rose, amid fears that the contagion could spread further.

Eddie Murphy Drops Out of Oscars Telecast

Eddie Murphy is dropping out as the host of the Oscars telecast, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the show's producer Brett Ratner stepped aside amid a storm of criticism over his use of an anti-gay slur over the weekend.

The hasty departures represented an embarrassing collapse of the Academy's plans for the Oscar presentation and left it with just over three months to fill key roles for one of the most elaborately staged television shows of the year.

Joe Paterno Announces His Intention to Retire

Penn State Coach Joe Paterno announced Wednesday that he plans to retire at the end of the football season, though it remains unclear if the university will allow him to coach that long in the wake of a sexual abuse scandal that has implicated top school officials.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Penn State's Board of Trustees had determined that Paterno would not coach next season, but was still discussing the precise timing of his exit. Despite Paterno's statement Wednesday, his immediate future is still in the hands of the board, which is scheduled to meet Friday. Gov. Tom Corbett plans to be in attendance.

News Alert: U.N. Report Details 'Credible' Case that Iran is Working Toward a Nuclear Weapon

Breaking News Alert

U.N. Report Details 'Credible' Case that Iran is Working Toward a Nuclear Weapon

United Nations weapons inspectors released a trove of new evidence on Tuesday that they say makes a "credible" case that "Iran has carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear device" and that the project may still be under way.

The long-awaited report, the harshest judgment that the International Atomic Energy Agency has ever issued in its decade-long struggle to pierce the secrecy surrounding the Iranian program, has already rekindled a debate among the Western allies and Israel about whether increased diplomatic pressure, sanctions, sabotage or military action could stop Iran's program.

The report offered no estimate of how long it would be until Iran would be able to produce a nuclear weapon. But it laid out the case that Iran had moved far beyond the blackboard to create computer models of nuclear explosions in 2008 and 2009, and conducted experiments on nuclear triggers. The report said that starting in 2000, the Iranians constructed a vessel to conduct those tests, which was not shown to inspectors who visited the site five years later.

Those tests "are strong indicators of possible weapon development," it said.

Penn State Said to Be Planning Paterno's Exit

Joe Paterno's tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks, in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials, according to two people briefed on conversations among the university's top officials.

The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno's exit, but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football's top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season. Discussions about how to manage his departure have begun, according to the two people.

News Alert: Joe Frazier, the Former Heavyweight Champion, Has Died

Breaking News Alert

Joe Frazier, the Former Heavyweight Champion, Has Died

Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champion whose furious and intensely personal fights with a taunting Muhammad Ali endure as an epic rivalry in boxing history, died Monday night. He was 67.

His business representative, Leslie Wolff, told The Associated Press in early November that Frazier had liver cancer and that he had entered hospice care.

Known as Smokin' Joe, Frazier stalked his opponents around the ring with a crouching, relentless attack — his head low and bobbing, his broad, powerful shoulders hunched — as he bore down on them with an onslaught of withering jabs and crushing body blows, setting them up for his devastating left hook.
