U.S. Added 200,000 Jobs in December; Unemployment Down to 8.5%
The United States added 200,000 jobs in December, the Labor Department said Friday, in a sign that the economic recovery has built up a head of steam.
The nation's unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent from 8.6 percent in November, the government said.
The employment report built on a flurry of heartening economic news in December, when consumer confidence rose, manufacturing came in strong and small businesses showed signs of life. It was the sixth straight month that the economy has added more than 100,000 jobs.

Defying Republicans, Obama to Name Cordray as Consumer Agency Chief
President Obama will challenge Senate Republican foes of the newly created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by naming Richard Cordray as its director while Congress is out of town, according to a senior administration official.
That would allow the agency to establish new regulations over financial institutions, putting into effect elements of the financial regulatory overhaul that was one of the administration's main achievements in Congress.
Mr. Obama's exercise of constitutional powers to name top officials without Senate confirmation while Congress is in recess is a stiff challenge to Republicans, who have attempted to block the maneuver by holding "pro forma" sessions over the holidays.

Yahoo Names PayPal President as C.E.O.
Yahoo named the president of PayPal, Scott Thompson, as its chief executive to replace Carol Bartz, who was dismissed in September, the company said Wednesday.
Mr. Thompson has been running PayPal, the online payments unit of eBay, since early 2008, and was previously its chief technology officer. PayPal processed $29 billion in payments in the third quarter of 2011.
The former Web powerhouse is undergoing a strategic review as it struggles to compete with newer heavyweights Google and Facebook. It has been run by Tim Morse since Ms. Bartz's departure; the company said Mr. Morse would return to his former role as chief financial officer.

Iowa G.O.P. Declares Mitt Romney Caucus Winner
The Iowa Republican Party pronounced Mitt Romney the winner of the state's caucuses Tuesday night by a margin of just eight votes over Rick Santorum, with Mr. Romney receiving 30,015 votes to Mr. Santorum's 30,007.
With Ron Paul coming in a not too distant third, the caucuses did not deliver a clean answer to what type of candidate Republicans intend to rally behind to try to defeat President Obama and win back the White House.
Once at risk of finishing last in the caucuses, Mr. Santorum had a meteoric rise in the final weeks leading up to Tuesday's vote. Appealing to social conservatives and evangelicals, Mr. Santorum staked his entire campaign on Iowa and had visited all 99 counties in the state by November. He will face a difficult challenge in New Hampshire, where he has spent little time campaigning.
Mr. Romney had gained confidence recently as he saw his Iowa poll numbers rise and decided to compete more aggressively in the state. He will now head to New Hampshire, where he has a strong hold in the polls.
