News Alert: Sidney Lumet, Director of American Film Classics, Dies at 86

Breaking News Alert

Sidney Lumet, Director of American Film Classics, Dies at 86

Sidney Lumet, a director who preferred the streets of New
York to the back lots of Hollywood and whose stories of
conscience -- "12 Angry Men," "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon,"
"The Verdict," "Network" -- became modern American film
classics, died Saturday morning at his home in Manhattan. He
was 86.

His stepdaughter, Leslie Gimbel, said the cause was lymphoma.

"While the goal of all movies is to entertain," Mr. Lumet
once wrote, "the kind of film in which I believe goes one
step further. It compels the spectator to examine one facet
or another of his own conscience. It stimulates thought and
sets the mental juices flowing."

Social issues set his own mental juices flowing, and his best
films not only probed the consequences of prejudice,
corruption and betrayal but also celebrated individual acts
of courage.

News Alert: Obama Meeting Fails to End Stalemate Over Federal Budget

Obama Meeting Fails to End Stalemate Over Federal Budget

President Obama met at the White House on Wednesday night
with House Speaker John A. Boehner and Senator Harry Reid of
Nevada, the majority leader, but they failed to reach an
agreement to end a budget stalemate that has threatened to
shut down the government.

After the meeting ended, Mr. Obama warned that a shutdown
must be avoided. "A shutdown will have real effects on
everyday lives," he said at a White House press conference.

The nighttime meeting, called Wednesday afternoon by Mr.
Obama, underscored the drama in the nation's capital as the
White House and Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill spent
the day pointing fingers at each other in advance of a
possible government shutdown on Saturday. The government's
authority to spend money runs out at midnight on Friday
night.

Texas A&M Tops Irish for First N.C.A.A. Basketball Title

Texas A&M defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 76-70,
winning its first championship in school history.

It was far from an easy road to the title; the Aggies had to
go through No. 1 seeds Baylor and Stanford just to get to the
title game. But led by senior Danielle Adams, the Aggies were
able to overpower Notre Dame, despite blowing a 13-point
first-half lead.

Adams finished with a game-high 30 points and added nine
rebounds, capping a season that included All-American honors.

Two Important Reminders

The White House, Washington

Good afternoon,

If you're like me, you've got taxes on the brain this time of year, so I wanted to remind you of two things.

First, don't forget the tax filing deadline this year is April 18, not April 15.

Second, when you are filing your taxes this year, you will benefit from $160 billion of tax relief for middle-class families that President Obama secured this past December -- in addition to extending unemployment insurance, the 2001 and 2003 middle-class tax cuts and other key provisions. If you are one of the nearly 160 million Americans benefitting from the payroll tax cut, which was in the same package of middle-class tax relief, you are already seeing the additional savings in your paycheck.

We have put together a new tax cut calculator on WhiteHouse.gov that will show you exactly what these tax cuts mean for you and your family. We've also included a link to Recovery Act tax cuts you may be eligible to claim on your 2010 taxes as you file this month. Just answer a few simple questions and our tax cut calculator will demonstrate how President Obama's tax cuts will benefit you, personally, in 2011.

Take a look:

Here are some highlights from the tax cuts and extensions that President Obama got you last year:

  • Payroll Tax Cut. President Obama's tax cut included a 2% payroll tax cut -- which amounts to $1,000 for a typical family earning $50,000 a year.
  • Child Tax Credit. President Obama cut taxes for 11.8 million families with children.
  • Earned Income Tax Credit. President Obama expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit for married couples and families with three or more children. This will help 5.8 million working families and 12.5 million children in 2011.
  • American Opportunity Tax Credit. President Obama extended a tax credit of up to $2,500 per student per year (up to four years) to help pay for tuition and other college expenses.

Tax season is never pleasant, but hopefully these cuts will lighten the load for you.

Sincerely,

Austan Goolsbee
Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers

P.S. In other news, mark your calendars. On April 20, President Obama will be attending a special facebook townhall event at the facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California to talk about the economy. Learn more about the event and RSVP here:
