Deficit Talks Scaled Back Over Tax Increases

Citing differences over tax revenues, House Speaker John A. Boehner on Saturday night said he would drop his push with President Obama for a far-reaching, $4 trillion deficit-reduction plan tied to a proposal to increase the federal debt limit.

On the eve of a second round of high-level bipartisan talks set for Sunday, Mr. Boehner issued a statement saying he would now urge negotiators to instead focus on trying to craft a smaller package more in line with the $2 trillion in cuts negotiated by Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

News Alert: Derek Jeter of the Yankees Gets Hit No. 3,000, a Home Run to Left

Derek Jeter of the Yankees Gets Hit No. 3,000, a Home Run to Left

Derek Jeter became the 28th player in baseball history to reach 3,000 hits on Saturday, with a home run to left field in the third inning at Yankee Stadium off of David Price of Tampa Bay. In doing so, Jeter became the first player in the Yankees' storied history to reach the hallowed number.
Jeter is the active leader in hits and the first player to collect his 3,000th since Craig Biggio of Houston in 2007. He is also the first to achieve the milestone at Yankee Stadium, old or new, and the fourth youngest player to do it. Only Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron and Robin Yount joined the club at a younger age than Jeter, who turned 37 on June 26.
Jeter accomplished it all without playing anywhere but shortstop, the most physically demanding position on the field besides catcher. Only three other players, Honus Wagner, Cal Ripken Jr. and Yount, have recorded 3,000 hits while playing most of their careers at shortstop.

Atlantis took off from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on the final mission of the 30-year space shuttle program. The shuttle, with a reduced crew of four, is ferrying supplies on a 12-day mission to the International Space Station, which was assembled in orbit from parts carried into orbit by earlier shuttles and other rockets and is now largely complete. The launch took off within a few minutes of its scheduled time despite threatening weather and a brief technical delay.

News Alert: U.S. Economy Added Only 18,000 Jobs in June

Breaking News Alert
The New York Times
Friday, July 8, 2011 -- 8:36 AM EDT
-----

U.S. Economy Added 18,000 Jobs in June; Unemployment Rate Rose to 9.2%

The United States economy added only 18,000 jobs in June, a blow to hopes for a resurgence in hiring, the Department of Labor said on Friday. The unemployment rate rose to 9.2 percent from 9.1 percent in May, the department said.

The increase in nonfarm payrolls came mostly from private companies, which added 57,000 jobs in June, from a revised gain of 73,000 in May, the monthly report said. In general, government agencies have been shedding jobs as they grapple with budget pressures.

Over all, the gain for May was revised downward to 25,000 from the initial report of 54,000.

The report showed the continuing challenges of adding jobs to the economy even at a rate that keeps pace with population growth, two years after the official end of the longest economic downturn since the Great Depression.
