CDC MMWR News Synopsis for October 20,2016

MMWR- Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report

MMWR news synopsis for October 20, 2016

Declines in Opioid Prescribing After a Private Insurer Policy Change — Massachusetts, 2011 — 2015

Public and private insurers can implement policies and programs that promote best practices in opioid prescribing to reduce risk for dependence and abuse associated with these drugs among their members while ensuring access to effective pain management. Overdose deaths involving opioid pain medications have reached epidemic levels in the U.S., in part because of high opioid prescribing rates and abuse of these drugs. In July 2012, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the largest insurer in the state, implemented a comprehensive opioid utilization program. During the first three years of program implementation, the average monthly prescribing rate for opioids decreased nearly 15%. Approximately 21 million fewer opioid doses were dispensed in the first three years after program implementation. This suggests the Blue Cross Blue Shield initiative played an important role in reducing the use of prescription opioids among its members. Public and private insurers could benefit from implementing their own best practices for prescription opioid management that ensure accessible pain care while reducing the risk for dependence and abuse associated with these drugs.

National Progress Toward Hepatitis C Elimination — Georgia, 2015 — 2016

Georgia's hepatitis C elimination program, the first of its kind in the world, can provide information and experience that will assist similar goal-setting and programmatic efforts in other countries. The country of Georgia has one of the highest hepatitis C prevalence rates in the world, affecting 8% of the 3.7 million population. Georgia is the first country to take on the challenge of eliminating hepatitis C and has, as part of a comprehensive hepatitis C elimination plan, committed to treat and cure every hepatitis C-infected person in the country. In April 2015, in collaboration with CDC and other partners, Georgia embarked on a program to eliminate hepatitis C infection, subsequently defined as achieving a 90% reduction in prevalence by 2020. The initial phase of the program focused on providing free, curative HCV treatment to infected people with advanced liver disease. By April 2016, a total of 27,392 HCV-infected people registered for the program; 31% started treatment, 69% completed treatment, and 83% of those who completed treatment were cured of HCV.

Status of New Vaccine Introduction — Worldwide, September 2016

Sustaining the health gains made through introduction of new vaccines will require country commitment, secure funding, ensuring vaccine supply, creating and maintaining new age and target-population delivery platforms, and addressing competing demands on health care systems and resources. Historically, new vaccines became available in low- and middle-income countries decades after being introduced in high-income countries.

Children from low-income families are 20% less likely to get dental sealants than children from higher-income families

[PDF, 2.4 MB, 4 Pages]

Dental sealants are thin coatings that when painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars) can prevent cavities for many years. School-age children (ages 6-11) without sealants have almost 3 times more 1st molar cavities than those with sealants. Although the overall number of children with sealants has increased over time, low-income children are 20% less likely to have them and 2 times more likely to have untreated cavities than higher-income children. Untreated cavities can cause pain, infection, and problems eating, speaking, and learning. States can help millions more children prevent cavities by starting or expanding programs that offer dental sealants in schools.

Key points include:

  • Dental sealants prevent 80% of cavities in the back teeth, where 9 in 10 cavities occur

  • About 60% of children ages 6-11 years don't get dental sealants.

  • Children from low-income families are 20% less likely to get dental sealants than children from higher-income families

Conduct Research at the National Center for Health Statistics

Conduct Research at the National Center for Health Statistics

Statistical information plays an important role in guiding actions and policies to improve the health of the American people. With this guiding principle, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and AcademyHealth have collaborated for almost two decades for the NCHS/AcademyHealth Health Policy Fellowship program. Now accepting applications for the 2017 cycle, this fellowship program brings experts in health services research-related disciplines to the NCHS to conduct studies to address important issues in health policy.

The selected fellow will gain full access to NCHS data resources as well as several opportunities for professional development, collaboration, mentoring partnerships, and dissemination. During the 13 month tenure, the selected fellow will work closely with an NCHS staff member who can provide technical expertise related to the fellow's research, assist in accessing NCHS data systems and other resources, and help identify other collaborative opportunities within the Center.

The 2017 Fellow will also:

  • Present research at an NCHS seminar
  • Learn the fundamentals of health policy development and implementation at AcademyHealth's Health Policy Orientation
  • Attend and present research at AcademyHealth conferences, including the National Health Policy Conference and Annual Research Meeting

Applicants are required to complete the Intent to Apply form online to begin the application process. For more information, visit the AcademyHealth website or email nchs@academyhealth.org
