News Alert: Joel I. Klein, Former N.Y. Schools Chief, Emerges as Murdoch̢۪s Unlikely Ally

Joel I. Klein, Former N.Y. Schools Chief, Emerges as Murdoch's Unlikely Ally

Joel I. Klein, the former New York City schools chancellor, was in a tricky position. Three weeks ago, Rupert Murdoch asked Mr. Klein, now his trusted deputy, to oversee an investigation into the phone hacking scandal that has deeply wounded News Corporation and its chairman, something Mr. Klein was eager to avoid.

"I am trying to get as far away from this as I can," he lamented to a friend.

He has not succeeded. Mr. Klein, who joined News Corporation as a senior vice president in January, is not only responsible for the investigation that could uncover what company managers knew about the hacking, but he has become one of Mr. Murdoch's closest and most visible advisers throughout the crisis.

His seemingly contradictory roles — de facto chief of internal affairs officer and ascendant executive with Mr. Murdoch's ear — are raising questions about how robust and objective the internal inquiry can be.

Boehner Says Work Has Begun on New Debt Deal to Cut $3 Trillion to $4 Trillion

Hoping to reassure markets in the wake of an angry breakdown in the federal budget negotiations, Congressional leaders raced Saturday to reach a new deficit-reduction agreement that Speaker John A. Boehner told colleagues could cut $3 trillion to $4 trillion in spending over 10 years.

"We are working, and I'm confident there will be resolution," Mr. Boehner told fellow House Republicans on an afternoon conference call, according to participants. "There has to be."

Mr. Boehner's comments came a little more than a week before the federal government risks defaulting on its debts, a fate that could be avoided if Congress agrees to increase the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling.

Norway Police Say at Least 80 Killed in Youth Camp Shooting

At least 80 people were killed on Friday when a gunman stalked youths at an island summer camp for young members of the governing Labor Party, the police said on national television early Saturday.

Before the shooting attack, explosions in Oslo killed seven people and wounded at least 15, the police said, according to the state television broadcaster.

After the shooting the police seized a 32-year-old Norwegian man on the island, according to the police and Justice Minister Knut Storberget. He was later identified as Anders Behring Breivik and was characterized by officials as a right-wing extremist.

The man was arrested in connection with both attacks.

House Speaker Boehner Pulls Out of Debt Ceiling Talks

The Republican House speaker, John A. Boehner, said Friday that he had broken off talks with President Obama on getting a budget deal to avert a government default.

Top Republican aides said Mr. Boehner would now work with Senate leaders on an alternative aimed at averting a market-rattling, first-ever federal default.

At a press conference late Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed the 109-billion-euro aid package for Greece. According to drafts of a statement that was being discussed earlier in the evening by the 17 euro zone heads of government, banks have agreed to take part in several programs to reduce Greece's debt, including plans that would mean exchanging existing bonds for new bonds with lower interest rates and longer maturities.

Animal species all follow the same rule for how common they are in an ecosystem, scientists have discovered. And the rule is simple.

Everything from birds to fishes, crabs to snails to worms, and the parasitic animals that live inside or on them, follows it.

"You can predict how common something might be just by knowing its body weight--how big an individual is--and how high up the food chain it is," says biologist Ryan Hechinger of the University of California at Santa ...

This is a scanning electron microscope image of a new material that self-assembles into polyhedra.

Chemical reactions happen all of the time: Some things burn or rust; others react to light exposure. Even batteries use chemical reactions to supply electricity. One of the big challenges chemists continually face is finding new ways to control these reactions or create conditions that promote desirable reactions and limit undesirable ones.

Recently, researchers at New York University (NYU) demonstrated an ability to make new materials with empty space on the inside, an advancement ...
