Two Days Left to Rate the Commencement Challenge Finalists

Have you rated the six finalists in the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge yet? You can review and rate each school on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the highest) before Friday April 29 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Your ratings will help us narrow down the pool to three finalists and President Obama will select the winning school from one of these three.

News Alert: U.S. Economic Growth Slows to 1.8% Rate in First Quarter

Breaking News Alert

U.S. Economic Growth Slows to 1.8% Rate in First Quarter

The American economy slowed to a crawl in the first quarter,
but economists are hopeful that the setback will be
temporary.

Total output grew at an annual pace of 1.8 percent last
quarter, the Commerce Department said Thursday, after having
expanded at an annualized rate of 3.1 percent at the end of
2010. Most economists had forecast growth of 2 percent in the
first quarter.

The slowdown was largely the result of a widening trade
deficit, a larger decrease in federal government spending and
higher commodity prices, which reduced the amount of pocket
money that households and businesses had available to spend.

Tornadoes Ravage South; Death Toll at 173

The death toll in five Southern states rose sharply Thursday
morning to 173 after devastating storms ripped through five
Southern states, spawning a deadly tornado in downtown
Tuscaloosa, Ala., and leaving a trail of flattened homes and
buildings in a region already battered by storms.

Across Alabama, at least 128 people were killed by storms on
Wednesday alone, according to Reuters. The Associated Press
reported an additional 32 deaths in Mississippi, 11 in
Georgia and 1 each in Tennessee and Virginia.
