Building upon research conducted during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, engineers have incorporated a swellable nano-structured glass called Osorb® into a system for extracting pollutants like dissolved petroleum from water--and collecting the petroleum for later use.

Republican National Committee Selects Reince Priebus of Wisconsin as Chairman

The Republican National Committee selected a new chairman on
Friday, with Reince Priebus of Wisconsin surviving seven
contentious rounds of balloting to succeed Michael Steele as
party officials expressed a desire for new leadership to
prepare for the 2012 presidential election.

Mr. Priebus, who broke away from Mr. Steele's inner circle to
run against him, pledged to pay off the committee's $21
million debt and strengthen state parties across the country
to build upon the Republican victories in the midterm
elections. Mr. Priebus received 97 votes from the committee.

Michael Steele Abandons Bid for Re-election as Republican Chairman

Michael Steele, the controversial chairman of the Republican
National Committee seeking a second term, withdrew after the
fourth round of balloting at a committee meeting in Maryland.
"Two years, we've had a good time," he said. "We've worked
hard, built a party. But it's very clear the party wants to
do something different."

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party,
led the voting after four rounds but did not yet have enough
votes to win.

President of Tunisia Leaves Country Amid Growing Chaos

President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia has left the
country, French diplomats say, and the Associated Press
reported that the prime minister has gone on state television
to say he is in charge.

A French Foreign Ministry official said authorities did not
know where the president had gone, and Tunisian authorities
were not immediately available to confirm the report.
