CDC Vital Signs provides recent, comprehensive data on key indicators of important health topics for key diseases, conditions, or risk factors. The January 2011 Vital Signs presents information on Adult Seat Belt Use.

Seat belt use has become the norm in the United States, reaching a high of 85% in 2008. Yet millions of Americans are not protected from injury because they are not wearing their seat belts on every trip. Primary seat belt enforcement laws—where police officers can pull cars over and issue tickets solely because drivers and passengers are unbelted—are an effective tool to increase seat belt use.
