Weather Affects Unemployment Report as Only 36,000 Jobs Added Last Month

The United States economy added 36,000 jobs in January, far
fewer than economists expected, and far fewer than needed to
make headway in improving the labor picture, the Department
of Labor reported. Poor weather contributed to the slow pace
of job creation, as the construction and transportation
industries, among others, shed jobs for the month.

Paradoxically, the unemployment rate fell sharply to 9.0
percent.

"We're not creating jobs as fast as you'd like to see to
sustain an economic virtual circle," said Jerry Webman, the
chief economist at OppenheimerFunds.
