CDC Vital Signs

CDC Vital Signs provides recent, comprehensive data on key indicators of important health topics for key diseases, conditions, or risk factors. The September 2011 Vital Signs presents information on adult smoking, the health consequences of smoking and effective quit strategies.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease, disability and death in the US. Despite this, nearly 1 in 5 adults still smoke. Reducing tobacco use is a public health priority with known, effective actions for success.

There is no safe level of smoking. Even though, daily smokers are consuming fewer cigarettes per day, the best option for any smoker is to quit completely. Nearly 50% of adults who continue to smoke will die from smoking-related causes.
