Tampa Bay Rays Rally to Clinch A.L. Wild Card
In a ninth inning that served as a microcosm of their season, the Red Sox collapsed, blowing a one-run lead to lose to the Orioles 4-3. In an equally remarkable comeback, the Rays' Evan Longoria hit a walk-off home run to give the Rays an 8-7 victory over the Yankees and the American League wild card for Tampa Bay.
The Rays were down 7-0 in the eighth inning against the Yankees, but battled back to force extra innings. In the 12th inning, Longoria drove a line drive over the left field wall to seal the victory.
The Red Sox loss capped a 7-20 September that saw the Red Sox go from a playoff certainty to a historic footnote.
