CDC Vital Signs provides recent, comprehensive data on key indicators of important health topics for key diseases, conditions, or risk factors. The November  2011 Vital Signs presents information on the nonmedical use of prescription painkillers.

 

Deaths from prescription painkillers have reached epidemic levels in the past decade. Nearly 15,000 people die every year of overdoses involving prescription painkillers. Use for nonmedical reasons for people in the US, age 12 older, is reported at 1 in 20 in 2010.
