New CDC Vital Signs Report: Latest Information on Food Safety

CDC Vital Signs

CDC Vital Signs provides recent, comprehensive data on key indicators of important health topics for key diseases, conditions, or risk factors. The June 2011 Vital Signs presents information on food safety.

Each year, roughly one in six people in the US gets sick from eating contaminated food. Salmonella and other common germs are the cause of roughly 1000 or more reported outbreaks. Salmonella infection causes more hospitalizations and deaths than any other type of germ found in food.  Although salmonella is commonly associated with eggs and poultry, a wide variety of foods can be contaminated. Prevention measures are essential in reducing Salmonella and other foodborne illnesses.
