Romney Wins Wisconsin Primary, According to Exit Polls and Early Returns

Mitt Romney won the Wisconsin Republican presidential primary on Tuesday, according to exit polls and early returns, dealing a significant setback to Rick Santorum, who had campaigned hard for a victory there to persuade Republicans that he still has a clear path to the nomination.

Mr. Romney's victory in Wisconsin, a key Midwestern industrial state that many Republicans hope to put in play in the general election in November, showed that he could win the support of a number of groups that are key to Republican candidates. He won pluralities among Tea Party supporters, those who consider themselves very conservative, and those who care about the economy and the federal budget deficit. And he overwhelmingly won the votes of those who said that they most wanted a candidate who could defeat President Obama.

Mr. Romney also easily won the primary in Washington, D.C., where his closest rival, Mr. Santorum, was not even on the ballot.

Mr. Romney's victory in the nation's capital came despite the fact that he has spent considerably less time there over the years than his rivals who did appear on the ballot — Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, and Representative Ron Paul of Texas. The city only has 30,000 registered Republicans, but it has 19 delegates to award — more than the 12 New Hampshire had.
