What's New in Social Media

Welcome

This is the inaugural edition of CDC Social Fusion, a CDC-sponsored digital newsletter designed to keep you informed and up-to-date on CDC's social media activities, resources and information.  You are receiving this because you previously signed up for the What's New in Social Media email updates. In order to streamline the information sent out, we have consolidated information into a monthly newsletter. You may continue to receive email updates on topics that are time sensitive.

CDC's use of social media for health communications has expanded over the years to include a wide variety of channels. Although Facebook and Twitter are CDC's primary  social media  channels, several others, such as widgets, electronic greeting cards, podcasts, and online video have also been used to extend the reach of CDC's health messages. As the social media landscape continues to change, adapting to new channels and emerging technologies is essential to expanding reach and encouraging participation with new audiences. Information shared in CDC Social Fusion will allow you to stay current on CDC's social media activities, trends and best practices.

Spotlight on Online Video: CDC's YouTube Channel

CDCStreamling Health was launched in 2007 and currently has 309 online videos available for viewing. A variety of health topics are featured in the online video catalog including playlists for physical health, obesity, smoking and tobacco use, and global health.  In addition, CDC en Espanol includes health videos for the Spanish speaking population.

CDC's online videos are available for our public health partners to share and embed on websites, social media networks or blogs. As online video viewing continues to increase on both traditional and mobile sites, be sure to utilize this source to assist you in the distribution of current and accurate science and health information.

Nationwide Million Hearts Video Challenge

Million Hearts
In order to recognize individuals who work hard to provide care for their families and friends and give them a chance to share their stories, CDC and Million Hearts™  will launch the "Million Hearts™ Caregiver Video Challenge"  on July 16. The nation-wide contest is open until August 31.  A caregiver is a family member, friend, or someone who provides care to a parent, child, friend, or other loved one. Caregivers play an important role in maintaining and improving the heart health of loved ones.

Contest guidelines, rules and submission information can be found at millionhearts.challenge.gov once the site goes live on July 16th. Submissions will be judged on set criteria by a panel of judges. The first place winner will win $500. Second and third places winners will receive $250 each. All prize money was donated by private donors through the CDC Foundation. The video submitted by the first place winner will be placed on Million Hearts™ YouTube playlist and CDC's Healthy Streaming YouTube channel, be shared through social media, and be featured on the Million Hearts™ website.

Judging will take place from September 10- 28, 2012. Winners will be announced October 8, 2012. If you are a caregiver or you know someone who is a caregiver, join this contest today, create a video, and help Million Hearts™ save lives.
