CDC Vital Signs Update: Latest Information on Bloodstream Infections

CDC Vital Signs

CDC Vital Signs provides recent, comprehensive data on key indicators of important health topics for key diseases, conditions, or risk factors. The March 2011 Vital Signs presents information on bloodstream infections in patients with central lines.

Bloodstream infections in patients with central lines area preventable and a costly threat to patient safety. New data show that 58% fewer bloodstream infections occurred in hospital ICU patients with central lines in 2009 than in 2001. This decrease represents about 3,000-6,000 lives saved, and avoided costing about $414 million in excess healthcare in 2009 and about $1.8 billion in cumulative excess health-care since 2001. Although progress has been made, many bloodstream infections continue to occur throughout hospitals and in outpatient dialysis centers.
